MiSTA: An Age-Optimized Slotted ALOHA Protocol

We introduce minislotted threshold ALOHA (MiSTA), a slotted modification designed to minimize the network-wide time average Age of Information (AoI). In MiSTA, sources whose ages are below certain stay silent. A node with age above becomes active in next frame probability. The first transmits short control sequence minislot ahead actual data transmission, and if collision is sensed, it backs off derive steady-state distribution number analyze its limiting behavior. show that MiSTA probabilistically converges enquote thinned ALOHA, where users at steady state adjusts optimize age. With an optimal selection parameters, achieves AoI scaling sources, $n$ , as notation="LaTeX">$0.9641n$ which improvement over policy proposed earlier (for lowest possible notation="LaTeX">$1.4169n$ ). While achieving this reduction age, also increases theoretically achievable throughput approximately 53%, from 37% by regular ALOHA.
